Some good karma has come to a group of employees at a homeless shelter in Hamilton, Ontario.

Fourteen co-workers from the Good Shepherd Centre pitched in together for an OLG Lotto Max ticket and collectively won a $1-million Maxmillions prize in a draw early last month.

It was the first time the surprised winners had played the lotto as a group, and also the first time any of them had won, according to Global News. The Hamilton-area residents bought their ticket at for $5 a Fortinos grocery store on Dundurn Street.

Each of them will be using their share of the winnings for different things, from putting a down payment on a house to helping out some family members who could use the extra cash.

The story is especially heartwarming given the work the group does at the charitable centre, which provides free shelter, mental health programs, and emergency and social services to men, women and children in need.
